I always knew that Disney owning Star Wars was not a good thing, I always knew that JJ Abrams would completely ruin Star Wars, as he did Star Trek. When I heard of the whole "new canon" idea from Disney/Abrams, I was livid because all the Expanded Universe (EU) was completely gone. Now I haven't read all the EU stuff, there is simply too much, but two stories are dear to me and that are considered canon and liked by Lucas himself. Shadows of the Empire, and the novels and stories about Kyp Durron. Say what you will about the prequal films, but know that they are indeed Lucas's works are Lucas, IE TRUE, canon. I always knew something was just terribly wrong about this new canon of Star Wars, something huge, something that just devastates Star Wars as a whole.
Before I go and talk about it, for those who don't know, I absolutely HATED Abrams' Star Trek films. 2009 was not Star Trek by any means and to even consider Into Darkness to be a Wrath of Khan remake is utter insanity. He turned movies about exploration, thoughtful intellect and deep morals into pew pew lasers and lens flare with no regard to the original material. The actors were also poorly cast. I don't have a problem with Cumberbatch or Simon Pegg, but seeing them in those roles and in such horrible films hurts me. I have high expectations of television, movies, and video games alike. Hideo Kojima, Andrei Tarkovsky are some examples of my favorite directors. So, with big names like Star Trek and Star Wars, I expect a lot and the Star Trek movies didn't even come close to reaching that expectation.
So, I was watching Cinemassacre earlier today, watching the James and Mike Play Shadows of the Empire, and they mentioned that in A New Hope, that you can see the Outrider, Dash Rendar's ship, fly off from Mos Eisley.
Now, according Disney/Abrams anti-EU Canon, Shadows of the Empire doesn't exist anymore. So, that doesn't exist, huh? But, wait a second, the Outrider, from Shadows of the Empire, is in A New Hope, which is obviously is true, Lucas canon. So, what Disney/Abrams is saying, is that because of no more EU, Ep4 IV: A New Hope CAN'T HAPPEN. All due the Outrider scene.
WHAT THE CRAP, DISNEY AND ABRAMS?
So, yeah, I see past your flawed logic. What are you going to do now? Rename Not-Dash-Rendar's-ship so you can have your own canon? Screw off. Seriously, Screw off. You can't just cherry pick what you like about the true canon and trash the rest of it, you aren't the nicolas cage of Star Wars. You have no place in Star Wars at all. Abrams had no place in Star Trek either. Stop ruining great Sci-Fi. Stop making this new Star Wars and just leave Star Wars alone. If new movies must be made, then it must be based off the established canon. Again, going back to Kyp Durron, established story and character, with the whole Sun Crusher incident. THAT HAPPENED. That would be great to have a movie of. Even if its condensed from all the EU works. And what about Shadows of the Empire? That would be great to see a movie of. Maybe not in live action since the cast is old now, but an animation version of it in theatres would be awesome. Also what about everything that happened prior to Ep1? So much story and lore from the EU.
Point I'm getting is, Disney/Abrams has soo much to work with, so much established canon to work with, they think so highly of themselves that they think they can destroy years and years of EU work with the drop of a hat, just to pocket money.
However, in all fairness, I will go see EpVII. Its not right to talk about it, because I haven't seen it yet, its not even out. All this is against the Disney/Abram canon.
So, in honor of Shadows of the Empire, I've added Dash Rendar to my Cosplay To Do list.
I'm not going to let a corporation and some hack director tell me what Star Wars canon is and isn't. However, this is what I can say about EPVII: It won't make sense since EpIV never happened.
